Marlon Riggs

Marlon graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University. While at school, he realized he was gay and independently studied the portrayal of male homosexuality in American fiction and poetry. 

His first feature documentary was Ethnic Notions, which examines common anti-Black stereotypes in popular culture. The film received an Emmy Award. 

His film Tongues United, which explores the experiences of Black same-gender loving men in America, was added to the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry in 2022. 

The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) is a civil rights organization dedicated to the empowerment of Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and same gender loving (LGBTQ/SGL) people, including people living with HIV/AIDS.
