Judge Melissa R. DuBose

Judge DuBose is a judge for the District Court for the District of Rhode Island. She is the first Black person and the first LGBTQ+/SGL person to serve on this court. 

She prefers to use the term “court users” instead of defendant and plaintiff. 

Before becoming a judge, Melissa was a public school teacher teaching history and civics. 

The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) is a civil rights organization dedicated to the empowerment of Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and same gender loving (LGBTQ/SGL) people, including people living with HIV/AIDS.
