Dane Joseph
Dane Joseph was born on March 1, 1984. He is an award-winning writer and producer.
Dane Joseph is the son of Janice Harbin, a dentist, and Wayne Joseph, an orthodontist, of Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy in 2002, and went on to pursue his Bachelor of Arts degree at Seton Hall University. Joseph followed up by earning his Master of Arts degree from Columbia University in 2010, having earned a Seton Scholar Scholarship and graduating magna cum laude (with the Economics Honors Citation; valedictorian of major) from the former. He was also a 2004 New York City Government Scholar.
After earning his master’s from Columbia, Joseph went to work at a variety of entertainment powerhouses, most recently at MTV and VH1, where he is a development executive. As an actor, Joseph was featured in the national tour of Elton John’s and Tim Rice’s “Aida.” He also is a proud member of The Writers Guild of America East. Joseph is the creator, executive producer, and writer of “Drama Queenz,” the hit comedy web series that ran for three seasons, and was nominated for Indie Soap Awards (now the Indie Series Awards), featured in “Essence,” “Out,” and other major publications, made many “best of” lists, and was featured at top festivals across the country.
Most recently, Joseph served as executive producer on the recently wrapped feature film “Dreamland,” which was written and directed by Sundance and Tribeca alum John G. Young, film and stage star Anthony Rapp (“A Beautiful Mind,” “Rent”) and Tony nominee De’Adre Aziza (“Red Hook Summer,” “Passing Strange”). The film is distributed by Breaking Glass Pictures. Other recent projects include “The Breeding” (also recently acquired by Breaking Glass Pictures and coming in the fall of 2018), “What it Was” (BET/Urbanworld Official Selection), and “Subways” (winner, Best Feature-Harlem Spotlight, Harlem International Film Festival).
Additionally, Joseph produced the short films “Boys Like You” (winner, Best Male Short, 2011 North Carolina Gay & Lesbian Film Festival) and “Where Truth Lies” (nominee, Best LGBTQ Short, 2012 San Diego Black Film Festival), and the acclaimed documentary series “Fade In,” about LGBTQ youth in New York City. He also penned the family drama “Reflections in a Ditch,” winner of Best Play at the Venus/Adonis Theatre Festival, and helped develop the hit musical “Mighty Real: A Sylvester Musical.”
Joseph is passionate about creating works for new media, film, and television that showcase and highlight stories featuring the LGBTQ community of color. Through the production company he founded, Novo Novus Productions, he is committed to examining the classic and contemporary questions and concerns latent in the LGBTQ community of color, and celebrating its strength and beauty.
